Tracker Highlights – Period ending 12/29/2024

A few of the key findings of the report for the weeks ending December 29, 2024:

• Produced every four weeks, the Retail Tracker Report provides insight into category dollar sales, segment and variety sales, average price per pound, and other helpful metrics.
• Consumer sentiment is growing more optimistic, related to consumer belief that inflation and the economy will improve in the near term.
• This rising optimism resulted in more restaurant takeout and on-premise dining in December.  
• At retail, total and food and beverage dollar sales gained 2.1% in December, though unit sales were flat. The fresh perimeter increased sales by 3.5% with units up 0.4% over December last year. It is important to note that December sales reporting went through 12/31/2023 last year and 12/29/2024 this year (due to the Sunday date cut off), which no doubt moved some of the New Year’s meal dollars into the next quad week.
• White mushrooms had a higher-than-average share of sales with light consumers coming into the category during the holidays.
• Mushroom sales closed out 2024 with $1.52 billion in sales, down 1.9% versus last year.
• Pounds came in at 333.6 million for the year, which was down 2.6%.
