Mushrooms in the News: 09-12-2022
In a major national spotlight for mushrooms, The Today Show featured a lengthy section with cookbook author Samah Dada launching a series called “How to Eat Plants,” noting the first episode focuses almost solely on mushrooms. Live in studio, she previewed the series showcasing mushrooms as a “hearty, meaty” central ingredient, serving up portabella and shiitake stuffed ‘Mushroom Tacos’ to the entire on-air cast.
With National Mushroom Month upon us, retail and produce trades spotlighted Mushroom Council’s “Mushrooms are the Answer” campaign that showcases how mushrooms resolve several challenges consumers face in the kitchen. Progressive Grocer noted that that industry is “reading the room” correctly by making the connection to mushrooms addressing inflationary pressures. The second half of the story also notes that “this is where mushrooms come in” for retailers as a solution by cross-merchandising with the meat case. Other trades covering the campaign include The Packer, Produce Blue Book, Produce News and Perishable News.
A feature story showcasing how incorporating mushrooms can help stretch grocery dollars continues to earn coverage nationwide, with more than 2,500 outlets since late August now running the “A Savory Solution to Stretch Your Grocery Budget” story. The St. Louis Post Dispatch was among fresh outlets featuring it in recent days.
Tasting Table shared their recommendation on the best type of mushrooms to pair with steak (spoilers: it’s crimini). Richard Blais, a Top Chef veteran, shared one of his favorite mushroom recipes on the Rachael Ray Show. Delish also included a few mushroom-centric dishes in their article “29 Side Dishes to Turn Your Meatloaf Into a Meal”.
